RCW: Meet the men's basketball coaching staff

There’s a team of coaches and staff behind each successful Kansas team that is striving to bring out the best in each of the student-athletes and push them towards a common goal. Get to know this year’s coaching staff, including quick highlights and a link to their full bio.

BILL SELF
Head Coach | 14th Year
Bio Full Bio

  • Has guided Kansas to one NCAA Championship, two Final Fours, 12-straight Big 12 regular-season championships and seven Big 12 Tournament crowns.
  • Four time national coach of the year (2000, 2009, 2012 and 2016) and seven time conference coach of the year (2000, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016).
  • Has eight career 30-win seasons, which ties for third most in NCAA history.

KURTIS TOWNSEND
Associate Coach | 13th Year

  • Has been an assistant coach at Kansas since 2004-05 when KU went on its current 12-straight Big 12 regular-season title run, including two Final Fours and one NCAA National Championship.
  • While at Kansas, has coached 20 NBA Draft selections, including 13 first-round Jayhawks.
  • Prior to Kansas, had assistant coaching stints at California, Eastern Kentucky, Michigan, USC and Miami (Fla.).

NORM ROBERTS
Assistant Coach | Sixth Year

  • Has coached four NBA Lottery selections and nine NBA Jayhawks.
  • Was the head coach at St. John’s for six seasons, from 2004-11, and has been on Bill Self’s staff for 14 years.
  • His oldest son, Niko, played at KU from 2011-14 and his youngest son, Justin, is a freshman basketball player at Toledo.

JERRANCE HOWARD
Assistant Coach | Fourth Year

  • In three seasons at Kansas, has been part of three Big 12 regular-season championships, one Big 12 Tournament title, two in-season tourney titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • Came to Kansas after coaching stints at SMU, Illinois, Kentucky and Texas A&M.
  • Was an assistant coach for the USA gold medal men’s basketball team at the 2015 World University Games.

 

BRENNAN BECHARD
Director of Basketball Operations | Eighth Year
Bio Full Bio

  • Joined the KU staff in 2009 as a graduate assistant student manager and was named director of basketball operations in summer 2011.
  • Played in 35 games in three seasons playing at KU from 2007-09.
  • A Lawrence native who was a member of the 2008 NCAA National Championship team.

FRED QUARTLEBAUM
Director of Student-Athlete Development | Fourth Year

  • Enters his fourth year at KU with his previous coaching stint being at St. John’s under current KU assistant Norm Roberts.
  • Has a coaching resume that encompasses more than 20 years, including stops at St. John’s, Iowa State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Fairfield, Holy Cross, Towson and Navy.
  • Was an assistant coach for the USA gold medal men’s basketball team at the 2015 World University Games.

 

ANDREA HUDY
Assistant Athletics Director – Sports Medicine | 13th Year

  • Named the National College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in January 2013 by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
  • Under Hudy’s watch, Kansas became a signature school for the EliteForm training system.
  • Including her time at Connecticut and Kansas, has worked with 40 former student-athletes who went on to play in the NBA.

BILLY COWGILL, MED, LAT
Associate Director – Sports Medicine | 14th Year

  • Enters his 14th season on the KU sidelines for men’s basketball.
  • Has been a trainer for 19 years at three different schools – Kansas, Miami and Notre Dame.
  • The head trainer for the USA gold medal men’s basketball team at the 2015 World University Games.

 

JEREMY CASE
Video Coordinator | Second Year
Bio Full Bio

  • Came back to Kansas this summer after four seasons as an assistant coach at Houston Baptist (HBU).
  • Before HBU, was an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State after serving one season on the KU staff while taking graduate courses in 2008-09.
  • Played in 94 games as a Jayhawk from 2005-09 and was a member of the 2008 NCAA National Championship team.
