Back-to-back: Jayhawks’ 1V8 named Big 12 Boat of the Week
IRVING, Texas – For the second-straight week, Kansas rowing’s First Varsity Eight (1V8) boat was awarded the Big 12 Boat of the Week, the Conference announced on Friday. The Jayhawks’ 1V8 were honored for their come-from-behind effort against Kansas State which clinched KU’s third-straight Dillons Sunflower Showdown trophy.
KU’s 1V8 boat earned nine points in a thrilling bow ball-to-bow ball finish during the final race of the Sunflower Showdown, which put Kansas on top of K-State in team points, 12-10, to earn the victory on the Kansas River.
Kansas trailed 10-3 as a team entering the First Varsity Eight race last Friday. Midway through the race, KU’s 1V8 boat was behind by nearly a boat length. But the Jayhawks rallied behind the direction of coxswain Mallory Miller to close-in on the Wildcats down the stretch, gradually making up time. Kansas reached deep to cross the finish line with a 6:00.01 time, just ahead of K-State’s 6:00.88.
Rowers in the First Varsity Eight include sophomore McKayla Ross, junior BriAnna Dittberner, senior Katherine Young, senior Maddie Irelan, junior Kaelyn Thierolf, sophomore Meghan Karoly, senior Jordan Helms, and sophomore Peyton Anderson.
Last week, the First Varsity Eight earned Big 12 Boat of the Week honors for a first-place finish at the Mason Invite (April 23).
The Jayhawks return to action for the Big 12 Championship regatta, May 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
