Jayhawks Start Strong at Knecht Cup
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The University of Kansas rowing team got off to a phenomenal start in the first day of racing at the Knecht Cup, placing all boats in the top three of each race and sending each Varsity Four boat to Sunday’s Grand Final before severe weather conditions forced all racing to be canceled.
“We are taking it one race at a time,” said Head Coach Rob Catloth. “Progressing is our goal, and with our Fours going two for two getting into the Grand Finals we are happy about that.”
The Jayhawks started off the day racing in heat six with the First Varsity Four placing third against Boston College, Miami, Bucknell, Alabama and SMU. With a time of 8:06.81, the Jayhawks qualified for a spot in the semifinal race. During the semifinal race later in the day Kansas placed second with a time of 8:25.59 giving them an automatic bid into Sunday’s Grand Final.
Kansas’ Second Varsity Four boat competed in heat one against Alabama, Marist, Holy Cross, Fordham and Drexel. The Jayhawks placed first with a time 7:56.52 advancing them to the semi-final race. In the semi-final race Kansas followed the First Varsity Four lead as they stroked to a first place finish with a time of 8:26.20 allowing them to also qualify for Sunday’s Grand Final.
Up next in waters were the First Varsity Eight boat, which took on Temple, Connecticut, Holy Cross, New Hampshire and Villanova in heat six where they placed first with a time of 7:33.53.
The Second Varsity Eight won their heat with a time of 7:30.65 as they took on Boston University LWT, Old Dominion, Miami, Duquesne, Villanova and George Mason. They also fell victim to the inclement weather and were forced to push back their semi final race until tomorrow.
Inclement weather pushed the second half to Saturday’s races to Sunday, including the semifinals for KU’s First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight boats.
The Kansas Novice Eight also finished third in their heat with a time of 8:13.52. With this time the Jayhawk boat qualified for the semi-final race which will take place Sunday morning.
With weather permitting, Kansas will start Sunday racing in the Second Varsity Eight at 8:06 a.m. Eastern time.
