Kansas named Big 12 Boat of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas’ First Varsity Eight was named the Big 12 Boat of the Week after its standout performance this last weekend at the George Mason Invitational as announced by the league office on Thursday morning.

The Boat of the Week honor is the first of the season for the Jayhawks after bringing home the award twice last season.

Wave the Wheat won its first heat of the weekend after crossing the finish line in 6:34.8, eight seconds before second place finisher Old Dominion (6:46.7) and 16 seconds before West Virginia (6:50.4). With the victory, KU advanced to the grand finals to take on George Washington and Delaware.

Coxswained by senior Bailey Coolidge and with redshirt junior McKayla Ross, sophomore Morgan Kottas, senior Kaelyn Thierolf, junior Lilly Stewart, junior Peyton Anderson, redshirt senior Margret Winter, sophomore Isabel Horosz and redshirt junior Meghan Karoly, the Jayhawks won the grand finals in record time.

“It’s great to see all of their hard work paying off and for them to be recognized by the conference for a solid performance Sunday,” said interim head coach Carrie Cook-Callen.

KU’s 6:25.7 gold-medal finish was one of the fastest times in program history without being assisted by river flow or current. Wave the Wheat shaved nine seconds off its preliminary heat time in the grand finals to lead the Big 12 Conference to claim the GMU Invite cup.

Wave the Wheat will be competing again this Saturday at the Dillons Sunflower Showdown against Kansas State at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kansas. Racing begins at 11 a.m.
