Rowing Posts Solid Times at Big 12 / Big Ten Dual

BARABOO, Wis. — The University of Kansas rowing team put together a solid day of racing against host Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and No. 19 Iowa at the Big Ten/Big 12 Double Dual at Devil’s Lake State Park on Saturday. The Jayhawks competed in 12 races over two sessions, earning a first place finish in the Second Varsity Four and runner-up in nine additional races.

“I think overall we had good races today,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “There are differences in speed with top-level crews and one of our goals is to get ourselves in that top tier of crews. We rowed hard and our second four did well against Iowa, beating them. We raced hard and we are moving along to our goal for the season.”

In the morning session, Kansas had a tough matchup paired against No. 19 Iowa. The Third Varsity Four got race day started for the Jayhawks taking one of their nine runner-up places with a time of 8:27.1.

The Novice Eight, First Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight, and Third Varsity Eight each recorded second-place finishes. Finishing with times of 7:38.4, 8:20.5, 7:15.4, 7:10.2, respectively.

The Kansas Second Varsity Four highlighted the morning session, earning a first place finish against No. 19 Iowa, crossing the line in 8:06.9.

In the afternoon session the Jayhawks took on Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lightweights, where the Third Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four, First Varsity Four and First Varsity Eight were able to bring in second-place finishes tallying times of 8:16.8, 8:16.6, 8:06.1 and 7:21.5, respectively.

The Novice Eight and Second Varsity Eight posted third place finishes in their division but showing strong performances with times of 7:45.3 and 7:31.9, respectively.

The Jayhawks return home next weekend for its first and only home regatta of the spring season, as Kansas hosts Kansas State for the annual Sunflower Showdown on Saturday, April 30 in Kansas City at Wyandotte County Lake.
