Rowing to Host Scrimmage with Drake Saturday at Burcham Park

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas rowing team looks to continue a trend of fast racing when it welcomes the Drake Bulldogs to the Kansas River at Burcham Park for a scrimmage dual Saturday. Racing is scheduled to begin at noon and will last until approximately 2 p.m.

The Jayhawks turned in some of their fastest early spring times the last time out at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational (March 12-13) and have been training in Lawrence through Spring Break. The tune-up against Drake comes a week before the team heads to New Jersey for the highly competitive Knecht Cup on April 9, with the Big 12/Big Ten Double Dual (April 23), Dillons Sunflower Showdown with Kansas State (April 30) and Big 12 Championships (May 14-15) all looming in the future.

Saturday’s event will allow the team to showcase recent work on starts and sprints. The races will be conducted in front of the Kansas Rowing Boathouse and pavilion just off the intersection of Second Street and Indiana Street if weather conditions and wind allow.

Drake enters the weekend’s slate of racing on the heels of a spring break training trip that saw four boats match-up with a portion of Alabama’s rowing team in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Bulldogs entered the 2016 season picked to finish sixth in the 10-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll.
