Rychagova Tabbed Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the Second Time in 2016

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas freshman tennis player Anastasiya Rychagova was named the Big 12 Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday afternoon, the league office announced. Rychagova is picking up her second weekly honor of the season, as she also won the award on Feb. 3.

Rychagova, who is currently ranked 69th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings, was instrumental in leading Kansas to a perfect 3-0 mark during the past week, including a home win over No. 51 Baylor in its Big 12 Conference opener, a neutral court win over No. 72 Tulane and a road win at Houston.

A Moscow, Russia native, Rychagova went 2-0 in singles play (with one unfinished match) and was also perfect in doubles action at 3-0. Her play helped the Jayhawks defeat conference foe Baylor for the first time since 2002, ending a 16-match losing streak to the Lady Bears. Rychagova also helped clinch KU’s win over Houston with her 7-5, 7-5 win over 107th-rated Despoina Vogasari.

Rychagova, who teams up with sophomore Smith Hinton at No. 3 doubles, helped Kansas pick up the all-important doubles point in each of the three matches during the week for KU. She and Hinton remain unbeaten in doubles play on the year.

The Jayhawks will host get back into Big 12 Conference play this weekend as No. 27 Kansas will welcome No. 35 Texas to the Jayhawk Tennis Center for a 4 p.m., match on Friday, March 18. Kansas will be looking to pick up its first-ever win over the Longhorns when they battle UT Friday afternoon.
