Rock Chalk World Series Underway

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After concluding the fall season, Kansas softball began the Rock Chalk World Series on Monday afternoon. The first game of the three-game series ended with Semper Fi defeating the Superhawks, 4-0.

Semper Fi includes seniors Alex Jones and Nikki Bruce, junior Maddie Stein, sophomores Chaley Brickey and Kylee Kennedy and freshmen Taylor Dodson and Sophia Templin. Sophomore Kelsey Kessler started in the circle for Semper Fi.

In the other dugout on the Superhawks is senior Taylor Hatfield, junior Chanin Naudin and freshmen Lily Behrmann, Harli Ridling, Katelyn Schumacher and Taylor McElhaney. Junior Alicia Pille handled the pitching duties for the Superhawks in the first game of the series.

The Superhawks and Semper Fi traded singles early in the game after Kennedy and Hatfield each recorded a hit. Hatfield’s single ended up being the only hit Kessler gave up.  

Kessler struck out nine batters her six inning shutout for Semper Fi, while Pille struck out three in her six inning performance for the Superhawks.

Semper Fi broke up the pitching duel in the fifth inning and put two runs on the board. Jones led off the fifth frame with a single and Brickey followed with a double that allowed Jones to come home. A sacrifice hit from Dodson moved Brickey into scoring position. Stein plated the second run of the inning giving Semper Fi a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Brickey launched one over the outfield fence for a two-run home run extending Semper Fi’s lead to 4-0.

Semper Fi outhit the Superhawks 6-1. Kansas softball continues the Rock Chalk World Series on Tuesday afternoon and concludes on Wednesday afternoon.
