Semper Fi Crowned Rock Chalk World Series Champions

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 2013 Rock Chalk World Series has come to an end and Semper Fi went a perfect 3-0 in the series against the Superhawks. Semper Fi defeated the Superhawks 12-5 and 3-2 in the final two games.

Sophomore Kelsey Kessler was named the Defensive MVP for the series, while fellow sophomore Chaley Brickey earned Offensive MVP honors for her performance in the three-game series.

In the second game of the series, the offense heated up for both teams as Semper Fi outhit the Superhawks 13-10. Brickey, senior outfielder Alex Jones, junior first baseman Maddie Stein and sophomore infielder Kylee Kennedy recorded three hits each. Brickey led the team with four RBI.

The Superhawks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Semper Fi answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to take the lead, 2-1.

Semper Fi had a huge second inning scoring nine runs on eight hits. Brickey and Stein each had two RBIs in the bottom of the second inning. Semper Fi added another run in the third inning with Brickey’s RBI single, but Semper Fi headed into the fourth inning with a 12-1 lead.  

The Superhawks chipped away at Semper Fi’s lead in the fourth inning by plating four runs on four hits. Freshman Katelyn Schumacher and senior Taylor Hatfield finished the game with two hits and a RBI. Five different players drove in runs for the Superhawks. Semper Fi held on to win 12-5.

Juniors Alicia Pille and Beth Wilson and freshman Sophia Templin split up the pitching duties in the second game. Unlike, the first game where each team had a one pitcher, the second game saw all three pitchers throwing for both teams. Pille recorded three strikeouts, while Wilson had one.

In the final game of the series, Kelsey Kessler and Pille pitched two innings a piece for each team. Kessler threw in the first two innings striking out five, while Pille threw the third and fourth innings and struck out seven.

Semper Fi took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Brickey launched a home run to left field. The Superhawks answered in the next half inning as Schumacher plated a run with a RBI single and Semper Fi led 2-1.

The teams traded runs in the fourth inning. The Superhawks come back in the final frame was halted and Semper Fi won 3-2 clinching the Rock Chalk World Series.
