Schneider adds Stephens to 2019-20 roster

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas head women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider announced the addition of Junior College All-American Tina Stephens to the Jayhawks’ roster on Wednesday afternoon.

Stephens, a transfer from Florida Southwestern College, signed her National Letter of Intent to play for the Jayhawks starting in 2019-20. She is ranked No. 24 overall and eighth for her position by Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Report.

"Tina led FSW to its first ever National Tournament appearance and best record in program history," said Schneider. "She's an extremely productive power forward, who we believe can be a real mismatch for opponents. She's a terrific finisher around the basket, but can also stretch it beyond the arc. We expect Tina to be an immediate frontline contributor."

The power forward was a 2019 First-Team All-American, twice named Sunflower Conference Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Region 8 honors twice. As a sophomore, Stephens averaged 20.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Last season, she set the single-season record for scoring with 527 points.

The junior college transfer chose Kansas over Pitt and Oklahoma State. She has two years of eligibility remaining.

Stephens joins the 2019 recruiting class that features Zakiyah Franklin (Winter Haven High School // Lakeland, Florida), Chandler Prater (North Kansas City High School // Kansas City, Missouri), Tamia Davis (SE Raleigh High School // Raleigh, North Carolina), Holly Kersgieter (Sand Springs High School // Sand Springs, Oklahoma) and Chisom Ajekwu (Lawrence High School // Lawrence, Kansas).

The 2019 signing class is ranked No. 31 in the nation by Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Report, which is the third-highest ranking among Big 12 Conference programs.
