Six Jayhawks earn Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball honors

IRVING, Texas – Six University of Kansas volleyball student-athletes are named on the Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball team released on Tuesday afternoon. Jayhawks listed include first-team honorees Addison Barry, Kayla Cheadle, Allie Nelson and Madison Rigdon, and second-team honorees Zoe Hill and Tori Miller.

A total of 62 Big 12 student-athletes were honored for their academic excellence by the league; 49 selections make up the first team with 13 honorees on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Nelson has started all 26 matches as KU’s libero this season and ranks second in the Big 12 in total digs (431). This is the first year of eligibility for the pre-business major after earning Rookie Academic All-Big 12 status in 2016.

An All-American outside hitter on the court, Rigdon earns Academic All-Big 12 honors for the third time in the classroom. The two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week leads Kansas in points per set this season (4.18). Rigdon is majoring in exercise science.

For the second-straight season, Cheadle earns Academic All-Big 12 First Team recognition. The sport management major averages 1.32 kills per set and 0.53 blocks per set during her senior season.

Barry picks up her first Academic All-Big 12 First Team nod after being a four-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Barry, a defensive specialist and community health major, has played in all 26 matches for the Jayhawks this season.

It also marks the first Academic All-Big 12 recognition for second-team honorees Hill and Miller. Hill, a pre-business major, leads the Big 12 in hitting percentage during Big 12 play this season (.461).
