Smagina falls in quarterfinals; Kansas concludes play at ITA Central Regional Championships

NORMAN, Okla.— Kansas women’s tennis concluded play Sunday afternoon at the ITA Central Regionals. Sophomore Sonia Smagina advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals in the singles main draw before ending run.

Smagina was the last Jayhawk standing in the six-day tourney as she advanced to the quarterfinals in the main draw after downing Margot Decker of Kansas State in three sets in the round of 16.

Freshmen Vasiliki Karvouni also competed in the round of 16, but dropped the contest to OSU’s Dariya Detkovskaya.

It was in the quarterfinals where the Jayhawks’ run ended with Smagina falling to Oklahoma State’s Lisa-Marie Rioux in a three-set battle by the score of 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.

"We're leaving regionals knowing what we need to work on. We didn't lose a match all weekend because we were the less talented player or less talented doubles team. We lost matches because we need to improve our competitive maturity when we face adversity. We will work hard on that during the next few weeks to be prepared for our next opportunity to compete. "
