Smagina moves on with straight-set win in ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla.— Sonia Smagina won her first match in the qualifying draw of the Saint Francis Health Systems ITA All-American Championships Monday. The sophomore defeated Denver’s Taylor Melville by a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Smagina will lock up with Chloe Beck of Duke at 11:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday (Oct 8.) as she looks to advance to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championship. Beck downed Maria Linares of K-State in her opening match on Monday morning.

Malkia Ngounoue and Maria Toran Ribes began doubles play in the qualifying round Monday as well. The pair fell to Ena Babic and Csilla Fodor from Purdue, 8-7 (6).

Ngounoue and Ribes continued play in the qualifying doubles consolation draw. The senior and sophomore duo defeated Tulsa’s Lian Benedejcic and Megan Hopton, 8-4.

Up next for Ngounoue and Ribes is a pair from Arkansas, Jackie Carr and Martina Zerulo.
