Texas outlasts No. 17 Kansas, 1-0
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A single goal proved to be all that was needed as the Texas Longhorns escaped the No. 17 Kansas Jayhawks, 1-0, in the Big 12 opener Thursday night at Rock Chalk Park.
With the loss the Jayhawks fell to 8-3-0 on the campaign, while the Longhorns advanced to 6-4-0 in the 2019 season.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, with neither team being able to find the back of the net through the first 45 minutes. Texas was stout on the defensive side, holding Kansas to five shots with zero being on goal in the first period.
Kansas came out firing in the second half taking seven shots, however, the Jayhawks’ continued to struggle with accuracy. KU’s lone shot on frame came off the foot of Katie McClure in the 47th minute, but the shot was saved by Texas keeper Nicole Curry. The Jayhawks also saw plenty of chances to capitalize in the Longhorn penalty area, as they amassed nine corner kicks while holding the Longhorns to three for the game.
The Longhorns capitalized off of a Jayhawk miscue in the 70th minute when Cyera Hintzen ran onto a well-placed ball into the KU box. Hintzen sent in her third goal of the season inside the left post, with the assist going to Haley Berg and Emma Regan.
KU ended the match with 12 shots compared to nine attempts for the Longhorns, however, UT managed five shots on goal, while KU tallied just one en route to suffering its third shutout of the season.
