No. 17 Jayhawks surge past Baylor, 4-1

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas’ Mandi Duggan picked a good time for the first brace of her career as the junior forward led the No. 17 Jayhawks to a 4-1 victory over the Baylor Bears Sunday afternoon at Rock Chalk Park.

The win moved the Jayhawks to 9-3-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in Big 12 play, while the Bears dropped to 5-3-3 in their 2019 campaign as well as a 1-1-0 mark in the league.

In the opening 45 minutes, Kansas was carried by its defense as the Bears found themselves on the offensive for most of the first frame. While Baylor managed to get off nine shots, the Jayhawks kept each from finding the back of the net and survived the early onslaught still scoreless after the first 30 minutes..

In the 30th minute however, the Jayhawks were finally able to get their first shot of the game where, just off the bench, Duggan delivered. Sophomore Bri Amos sent in a cross from the left side that found Duggan eight yards from the BU frame. She then used her head to find the back of the net off, her first of the season.

After taking the 1-0 lead into the intermission, both teams come out aggressively in the second half, but it was the Jayhawks that turned that aggressiveness into another goal. Just five minutes into the second period, sophomore Kailey Lane netted her fourth goal of the season off the feed from senior Katie McClure and freshman Ellie Prybylski.

KU continued to pressure the BU backline despite the two-goal advantage,ย  and with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Duggan used her head again to find the back of the net. It marked the first brace of her career and the third multi-goal match by a Jayhawk this season. McClure tallied her second assist of the afternoon.

Baylor got on the board via a corner kick with five minutes left of play to steal the Jayhawks shutout, but it was too little too late to try and ignite the comeback. Freshman Ebba Costow answered with her first goal at Kansas as time expired, bringing the final score to 4-1, KU’s largest margin of victory over Baylor since 2004.
