Jayhawks Add Icelandic Standout to 2016 Class

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas soccer team has added its sixth player to the signing class of 2016 with the signing of Iceland international Erna Gugjonsdottir head coach Mark Francis announced Thursday.

“Erna is a midfielder that will help us especially in the attacking third of the field,” said Francis. “She is excellent technically and has an excellent shot from range with both feet. We are extremely excited to add a player of Erna’s quality to our already strong 2016 recruiting class.”

Gogjonsdottir, who will join the Jayhawks ahead of the 2016 fall season, has a full international and club résumé. She has played eight games for the Icelandic U17 and U19 national teams, most recently in the 2015 UEFA U19 Championship qualifiers last spring. As a midfielder, she has averaged 34 minutes per outing and added a goal and an assist in her last four outings with the national team.

Gogjonsdottir has also spent three highly successful years with a domestic club team, Selfoss, of the Úrvalsdeild Women’s League. She was a one of the squad’s top-three goal scorers in 2014, netting six goals and adding seven assists. She followed the 2014 season up with two goals and eight assists in 2015, helping her squad to the Icelandic Cup final in both years.

The Jayhawks will continue their spring exhibition season next week when they welcome in the NWSL Champions FC Kansas City to Lawrence. Kickoff from Rock Chalk Park is slated for noon on Saturday, March 26.
