Jayhawks and Roos draw, 0-0, in spring opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. – In the first exhibition match of the spring 2018 season, the Kansas soccer team played to a draw with UMKC, 0-0, at Rock Chalk Park Saturday afternoon. The match served as an opener for Kanas’ nine-game spring exhibition season.

The first half saw the Jayhawks get out to a strong start. For a majority of the first 45 minutes, the Jayhawks controlled possession in the final third of the field. Kansas tallied six shots but the Roos goalkeeper halted three chances on frame, to keep the score deadlocked at halftime. After a hard fought second half, and a handful of close chances, neither team was able to find the back of the net. In the 60th minute Kansas freshman Ceri Holland fired away at point blank range but landed directly in the hands of the Roos goal keeper. The Jayhawks outshot the Roos 8-4 in the second half and 14-7 overall.

“There were definitely some good things that came out of today,” said head coach Mark Francis. “I thought we were very patient in the build-up and probably had four or five really good chances to score so that was good. There were some things that we’ve been working on in training that I thought came out in the game so that was good.”

Sophomore goal keeper Regan Gibbs got the start in the match and tallied one save, while junior Lauren Breshears came in at halftime and notched two saves.
Kansas will travel to Europe March 16-25, where it will play four matches against top-tier club teams.
