Softball lands 10 on Academic All-Big 12 Teams

IRVING, Texas — Kansas softball boasts a total of 10 student-athletes on the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Team released by the conference on Thursday.

The Jayhawks have the second-most first-team honorees (nine) and are tied for the second-most selections overall (10).  A total of 64 Big 12 softball student-athletes from seven teams are featured on the list.

Junior pitcher Andie Formby is one of four Big 12 softball student-athletes on the list with a 4.00 grade point average during the previous two semesters.

KU’s first-team members include Formby, junior outfielder Emily Bermel, senior outfielder Annie Mehringer, senior pitcher Sarah Miller, sophomore infielder Becki Monaghan, senior infielder Amanda Organ, sophomore infielder Madison Sykes and sophomore utility Lily Valeo. Senior catcher Harli Ridling is KU’s lone second-team honoree.

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Thursday’s release adds to the wave of academic success in the classroom for the Jayhawks of late. In the fall of 2017, KU softball achieved the highest GPA in program history as head coach Megan Smith’s roster of 24 student-athletes combined for a semester GPA of 3.45.
