STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State came from behind and scored seven unanswered runs to defeat Kansas, 7-1, in the first game of the series on Friday night at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Jayhawks (19-15, 1-3 Big 12) struck first in the opening frame, but the Cowgirls (23-11, 4-0 Big 12) responded in the bottom half off the first frame to take the lead and never looked back. After scoring seven unanswered runs, OSU won its fourth-straight Big 12 contest in 2017.
Freshman first baseman Becki Monaghan drove in the go ahead run for KU with a RBI double to left center. The Jayhawks’ advantage would last just the half inning before big OSU bats would answer. Kansas owns a 12-6 record when scoring before its opponent in 2017.
In the bottom half of the first frame, Oklahoma State evened the score, 1-1, after a fielder’s choice allowed the first Cowgirl run to cross home plate. Senior designated player Kristin Reasnor gave OSU the lead with a two-run home run to left field. Her fourth game in a row with a long ball gave Oklahoma State a 3-1 lead.
Senior Sophia Templin entered the game in relief for junior Sarah Miller with just one out in the first. With the help of the Jayhawks’ defense, Templin induced the final two outs to retire the side without allowing any further damage by OSU’s offense.
Junior shortstop Randee O’Donell led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left field. OSU’s second long ball of the game extended its lead, 4-1. With two outs in the second frame, the Cowgirls added one more run before the third out was made.
Kansas’ offense got off to a quick start, but OSU quieted the KU bats after the first inning and the Jayhawks faced a 5-1 deficit after the first two and half innings. Kansas recorded three hits in the opening two frames and was held to just three base knocks until Monaghan recorded her second hit of the ballgame in the sixth frame.
Oklahoma State added a run in the third after drawing a bases loaded walk. OSU’s run in the third with one out extended its lead, 6-1, over the Jayhawks. Junior third baseman Jessie Roane ended the frame with a bang-bang double play at the left corner.
Freshman hurler Mandy Roberts took over in the circle in the third and held the Cowgirls to two runs in four innings of work, including two shutout innings. The Lee’s Summit, Missouri native struck out three in her 13th relief outing of her rookie season. Although Roberts slowed OSU’s offense and gave Kansas some time to mount a comeback, KU’s offense couldn’t get anything go late in the game.
Oklahoma State added a run in the sixth inning and shut down KU’s offense for the sixth-straight frame to end the first game of the series. OSU came from behind for the 7-1 victory over the Jayhawks.

Kansas continues to Oklahoma State for a three-game series against the Cowgirls starting on Friday, March 31 at 6:50 p.m., at Cowgirl Stadium. All three games will air on the Jayhawk Radio Network.
