Godfrey Named Head Cheer Coach for KU

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas Spirit Squad is pleased to announce the hiring of new Head Cheer Coach, Jimmy Godfrey. A familiar face to the KU cheer program, Godfrey has served as a skill consultant over the past 15 years and was an assistant coach for the program from 2007-10.

Originally from Salina, Kansas, Godfrey was involved in many activities including theatre, which began his love for tumbling and performance.  While at Fort Hays State University (Hays, Kansas) these skills, along with his wrestling experience, initiated his being recruited to be a yell leader for the FHSU Cheer Squad.  While there, Godfrey was on the gameday squad and the NCA nationals teams from 1996-98.

After moving to Lawrence in 2000, he started as a tumbling and cheer coach with a local gym, ultimately becoming the elite tumbling coach and head all-star cheer coach.

In 2004, Godfrey was named the head cheer coach at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.  He advanced the program from a small all-women’s team to a nationally-ranked co-ed squad and a gameday crowd favorite.

Opening G-Force Athletics with his wife, Hallie, Godfrey has developed athletes who have gone on to be a part of some of the top all-star and college programs around the country, including numerous athletes for KU cheer.  In addition, he has developed many national champion teams at G-Force.

Excited to get started as the head cheer coach at the University of Kansas, Godfrey is looking forward to continuing to build a nationally-recognized program that alumni and fans can be proud of.
