Kansas travels to TCU for first road meet of season

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Jayhawks and the Horned Frogs dual it out this Saturday, October 28, in Dallas as the Kansas swimming and diving team takes a 24 hour 16-event expedition to showcase their hard work for the first travel meet of the season.

“We use the first two meets to kind of see who would be traveling, but it is definitely a business trip,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “We are flying down Saturday morning, we will swim Saturday afternoon, and fly home Saturday night. So we are going to get it done all in one day and be really tough.”

The coaching staff did not randomly pick who was going to be representing the Jayhawks against TCU this Saturday. They’ve been keeping a close eye on the swimmers and made sure to choose competitors they think will represent the team well and benefit from this quick day trip.

“It’s kind of a mixed bag of who is going and who is not, age wise,” Campbell said. “We chose a group of swimmers who have shown strength the past two meets and will give us the best shot of winning the meet at TCU. Some of the juniors and seniors have done this, but this will be the freshmen and sophomores first time trying it.”

Although this will be a new experience for many of the swimmers on the team, Campbell feels optimistic on how the swimmers will handle the trip to Dallas.

“It’s something that they get amped up for and we’ll see how they respond,” said Campbell. “Traditionally, we’ve always done well doing this. But it is a new team so you don’t know how they are going to respond. But I think it’s a good opportunity to practice toughness.”

Campbell anticipates a lot of exhausted swimmers on the trip home from the meet after they give it their all in the pool earlier that day in Texas.

“It’s more than just a meet, it’s an experience,” said Campbell. “A good way to prove to yourself ‘I am tough.'”
