Nusbaum earns share of Big 12 Swimmer of the Week award
IRVING, Texas – Kansas swimming and diving freshman Jenny Nusbaum collected her first-career Big 12 weekly honor as she was selected as the Women’s Co-Swimmer of the Week along with Texas sophomore Joanna Evans, as voted by the league’s coaches. The Cary, North Carolina native collected three first place finishes, including her seventh victory in the 200-yard freestyle this season, against Iowa State in the final regular season meet for the Jayhawks.
“Jenny performed really well (against Iowa State),” head coach Clark Campbell said. “She had one of our few victories in the meet against Arkansas (January 28), then she came back and had two of her best non-championship races against Iowa State last weekend. She really looks like she is peaking at the right time.”
Nusbaum has been lights-out this season in the 200 free, and it was more of the same against the Cyclones. Posting her seventh victory in the event, she kick-started her successful weekend as she would go on to win the 500-yard freestyle and help the 400-yard freestyle relay team take first.
“The 200 free is her thing,” Campbell said. “She really embraces that event and is really skilled at it. We are still working on fine-tuning some things to make her better, she has a lot of room to grow. That race is really good because it helps you have the speed to do the longer races, she does the 500, she will do the mile, but she can also come off the 200 and do the 100. It is a really good event that combines both speed and. She has really enjoyed that event so much and she has been able to compete at a high level consistently throughout the course of the year.”
With the regular season completed, Kansas has two weeks to prepare for the Big 12 Championship in Austin, Texas, February 22-25. The Jayhawks posted a program-best 650.5 points on their way to a second-place finish at the 2015 conference meet.
“This is our end-of-year celebration, this is what it’s all about,” Campbell said of the Big 12 Championship. “Our team has been together for six months, and in a couple of weeks we will go down to Austin and celebrate that time together. We are getting ready to taper and bring things down and we are looking forward to being in that championship environment.”
