Team Effort Leads Jayhawks Over Bobcats

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior forward Mariane De Carvalho led a balanced offensive attack with a career-best 19 points as Kansas cruises to a 68-48 victory over the Texas State on Sunday afternoon inside Allen Fieldhouse.

Every Jayhawk that touched the floor found a way to be productive for Kansas and recorded at least one field goal.

Kansas was in complete control during the first quarter, withΒ  De Carvalho and freshman guard Holly Kersgieter leading the way for the Jayhawks. The Bobcats started to close the gap and after careless ball-handling and turnovers on Kansas’ end, the Bobcats entered the locker room facing a five-point deficit.

The Jayhawks came out of the intermission ready to put the game away. Kansas used aggressive defense to force miscues from Texas State and its sharpshooting to go ahead by as much as 16 points in the third quarter.

However, Texas State was not about to go down without a fight and kept the game within reach throughout the duration of the second half.

A pair of three-point daggers midway through the fourth quarter from freshman guard Zakiyah Franklin and sophomore guard Aniya Thomas put the Jayhawks up by 14 and stole any last momentum away from the Bobcats. Kansas went on to increase its lead by 20 and never relinquished it, winning 68-48.

Three Jayhawks recorded double-digit scoring efforts in De Carvalho (19), Thomas (11) and Kersgieter (13) while junior forward Tina Stephens tallied 10 rebounds, which marks her third game in double figures on the boards.
