History Made; KU to host 2017 ITA Central Regional
LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the first time in school history, the University of Kansas and the women’s tennis team will host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional in the fall of 2017.
The championship tournament is scheduled for Oct. 19-23 at the brand new, $9 million, indoor-outdoor Jayhawk Tennis Center out at Rock Chalk Park. The facility boasts six indoor and six outdoor courts, along with multiple locker rooms.
“I think it’s a huge honor,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I think it’s a recognition of the time, effort and the dollars that have been put into this facility and into this program. We’re really happy to have the opportunity to host the regional tournament and showcase this facility”
The Jayhawk Tennis Center features stadium seating available both indoors and outdoors for a full view of every court. Each court has its own scoreboard and the outdoor courts have lights for evening matches.
“For the city of Lawrence to have the opportunity to see a high level of college tennis and host a championship, you don’t get that all the time,” said Chapman. “Hopefully, as a team, as an athletic department and as a community, we have the opportunity to put out a great product that will set us up to have more of these opportunities in the future.”
