Jayhawks 6-0 in singles on the second day
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Kansas sophomore Nina Khmelnitckaia and freshman Maria Toran Ribes earned perfect marks on the second day of the Little Rock Invitational at the Little Rock Country Club Saturday teaming together for a doubles win and posting respective singles victories.
The pair won the only doubles match of the day defeating Alexis Pereira and Madison Tedford from TCU (6-4). Playing in Flight A singles, Khmelnitckaia collected a tough 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory against West Virginia’s Christina Jordan. In Flight C, Toran Ribes earned her second collegiate singles win over Tedford of TCU (6-2, 6,4).
The Jayhawks were flawless on the singles’ court going 6-0 on day two.
“It was nice to see us rebound from the doubles this morning and compete hard in our singles matches,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I thought Tanya (Nikolaeva) played really solid singles (Saturday) and that was great to see out of a freshman against an experienced opponent. We look forward to closing out the tournament on a positive note.”
Also playing in Flight C, freshman Tatiana Nikolaeva defeated TCU junior Pereira (6-3, 6-3). Anastasia Rychagova topped Habiba Shaker of West Virginia 6-4, 6-3 in Flight A, to advance to the title match Sunday.
Janet Koch and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum finished the KU sweep by both posting singles victories in Flight B. Koch defeated Payton Jennings of Arkansas (6-3, 6-4). Bernard-Feigenbaum claimed her victory 7-5, 6-4 over Arkansas’ Sasha Shkorupeieva. With the win, Bernard-Feigenbaum advanced to the Flight B finals.
The event will conclude with finals on Sunday.
