Jayhawks advance at ITA National Fall Championships

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Kansas senior Desoina Vogasari and junior Anastasia Rychagova both advanced to the singles round of 32 after earning respective wins Wednesday at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

In the first round, No. 10-seeded Rychagova downed Asuka Kawai of Illinois, 6-2, 6-0. In the first set, Rychagova saved eight of the nine break points, while she cruised in the second set winning 24 of the 33 total points (73 percent).

Vogasari topped Baylor’s Theresa Van Zyl, 6-0, 6-3, to become the second Jayhawk in the round of 32. Like Rychagova, Vogasari cruised in her 6-0 set, winning 24 of the 34 total points (71 percent).  Vogasari also controlled her serve over the entire match, saving nine of 11 break points.

“Nastia (Rychagova) and Debbie (Vogasari) both did a great job of managing their matches (Wednesday),” said head coach Todd Chapman. “There are always first-match nerves that you have to navigate in a tournament like this and they both did a great job playing very composed. We are excited to see them both compete (Thursday) and represent the program.”

Kansas is one of just seven schools that have two student-athletes advancing to compete in the round of 32.

Rychagova will face Florida International’s Andrea Lazaro, who she defeated 6-3, 6-2, earlier this season in the qualifying bracket at the Riviera ITA Women’s All-American. Vogasari will see the No. 16-seeded Leolia Jeanjean of Arkansas in her second-round match.
