Jayhawks finish the Roberta Alison Fall Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Kansas tennis put up a good fight, but fell short on the last day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic Saturday.

“We finished this tournament better than we started it, which is exactly what we want to do,” said assistant coach Caroline Lilley. “I am very happy with how the girls competed in both singles and doubles today. They fought with professionalism, passion and composure.”

Maria Toran Ribes and Tatiana Nikolaeva started the day with a win against Danielle Spielmann and Smith Hinton of Alabama, 8-3. Next, the duo played for the Shelley Godwin Doubles Draw title, but fell short losing to Natalie Suk and Tea Jandric of Ole Miss, 8-5.

“The way we chose to respond and play aggressively when we faced adversity was encouraging to see,” said Lilley. “We found reasons to fight today (Saturday), found ways to dig deep and find another gear when we needed it most.”

Nikolaeva defeated Auburn’s Taylor Russo in a three-set match, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Summer Collins also won her singles match by topping Jennifer Moinard of Clemson, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Toran Ribes wasn’t able to top the host, dropping the Becca Baum Singles Draw title to Alabama’s Maddie Pothoff in a three-set match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
