Jayhawks get four wins on day two of the Kansas Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas juniors Anastasia Rychagova and Nina Khmelnitckaia both earned a pair of wins on day two of the Kansas Invitational at the Jayhawk Tennis Center at Rock Chalk Park.
The No. 37-ranked duo of Rychagova and Khmelnitckaia downed Washington’s Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong, 6-1. In singles, No. 35-ranked Rychagova defeated No. 60-ranked Taylor Russo of Auburn, 7-5, 6-1. Khmelnitckaia won her match, 6-0, 7-5, against Maryland’s Eva Alexandrova. Janet Koch topped AU’s Madeline Meredith, 6-4, 6-2.
“(Saturday) we had half of our team play, compete and emotionally engage at a high level,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “We were very proud of the product they put on the court and for our team. The disappointing part is that’s not what everyone did. We had half of the team where they needed to be and another half that didn’t play with that same passion and fight.
“It’s the tale of two sides. There’s part of me that’s pleased and part of me that’s not pleased. In this sport, we’re a team. The positive is that we have the opportunity to show up (Sunday) and finish the tournament on a high note and that’s the expectation we have for the whole team.”
Despoina Vogasari dropped her match to the Tigers’ Jaeda Daniel, 6-3, 6-2. Carla Pons Martorell fell to Ekaterina Tour from UM, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Amber Policare lost her match, 6-0, 6-1, to UM’s Millie Stretton. Tatiana Nikolaeva fought hard against Caroline Turner, but dropped the match, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.
Vogasari and Nikolaeva battled, but ultimately fell, 7-6 (7-2), to Stacy Fung and Alexis Prokopuik of Washington. Koch and Maria Toran Ribes weren’t able to overcome UW’s Kenadi Hance and Lana Slavica and fell, 7-5.
Policare and Martorell dropped their match, 6-2, to Stretton and Arnelle Sullivan of Maryland.
