Kansas moves on to Round of 16 in singles and doubles

ITA Central Regional Brackets

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s tennis team advances four singles players and three doubles teams to the round of 16 at the ITA Central Regional Championship presented by Oracle at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kansas.

“It’s a positive that we have as many players in the main draw of singles and doubles as we do,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “There’s been plenty of years where we haven’t. Our team has gotten better and we’re putting ourselves in good positions.”

No. 5 seeded duo of Nina Khmelnitckaia and Anastasia Rychagova outlasted Ally and Cassie McKenzie of Saint Louis, 8-5. Khmelnitckaia downed Nebraska’s M’balia Bangoura, 6-1, 6-0. In the round of 32, Khmelnitckaia topped No. 10-seeded Elise Van Heuvelen of Iowa, 6-0, 6-3

Tatiana Nikolaeva and Despoina Vogasari defeated Missouri’s Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Ellie Wright, 8-4. Vogasari topped Maria Linares of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-4. In the round of 32, Vogasari battled in three for a, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, win against UMKC’s Aliona Ladutska.

Janet Koch and Maria Toran Ribes topped Vasanti Shinde and Hayley Haakenstad of Nebraska, 8-5. No. 16-seeded Koch blanked Minnesota’s Kalyssa Hall in the second set to win the match, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0. Playing in the round of 32, Koch overcame Vera Ploner of Tulsa in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. Toran Ribes defeated Minnesota’s Barbara Mancera, 6-4, 7-5. Next, in the round of 32, Toran Ribes earned another win over Malene Stripp of Oklahoma, 6-0, 6-3.

“We’re going to have to play with more professionalism and composure (Saturday) than we did today,” said Chapman. “We were fortunate to get through some of the matches we did. That’s our goal tomorrow. It’s not win or lose, it’s the focus on approach and how composed we are when we face adversity. It feels great to be where we are, but we have to be better tomorrow at those areas or we won’t have success on the scoreboard.”

Playing in consolation, Carla Pons Martorell downed Mariluz Domingo of SLU, 6-0, 6-1. In her second match, Pons Martorell lost to Anastasia Reimchen of Iowa, 6-2, 6-3. Nikolaeva fell to Tina Kreinis of Minnesota, 6-3, 7-5. In consolation, Amber Policare dropped her match to Nebraska’s Katerina Matysova, 6-2, 6-1.

Saturday will kick off at 9 a.m., with the round of 16 and quarterfinals of doubles, followed by the singles Round of 16.
