Kansas nabs 11 wins on first day of the Kansas Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s tennis team earned 11 wins on the first day of the Kansas Invitational Friday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center at Rock Chalk Park.
 
In singles matches, the Jayhawks went 6-2 against Washington and Maryland. Nina Khmelnitckaia topped UW’s Lana Slavica, 6-3, 6-2. Tatiana Nikolaeva defeated Angela Li of UW, 6-2, 6-4. Despoina Vogasari prevailed in three sets to win her match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, against UW’s Vanessa Wong.
 
Anastasia Rychagova rallied in three sets to down the No. 18-ranked Stacy Fung of UW, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Amber Policare topped UM’s Arnelle Sullivan, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Carla Pons Martorell battled against Millie Stretton of UM to win it in three, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.
 
Maria Toran Ribes dropped her match to Alexis Prokopuik of UW, 6-2, 6-0. Janet Koch was not able to overcome UW’s Kenadi Hance in three sets and fell, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
 
“I thought for the most part we competed well (Friday),” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I think we definitely showed some progress in several areas that we have talked about with the team. Also, playing against good competition spotlights the areas you need to improve on and we now have the opportunity to correct those things (Saturday).”
 
In doubles, Kansas combined for a 5-3 record. The No. 37-ranked duo of Rychagova and Khmelnitckaia downed Alex Valenstein and Lana Rush of Texas Tech, 6-2. The duo then defeated Auburn’s Taylor Russo and Jaeda Daniel, 6-2.
 
No. 50-ranked Vogasari and Nikolaeva took down Madeline Meredith and Alannah Griffin of Auburn, 6-2. Koch and Toran Ribes topped Wichita State’s Ting Ya-Hsu and Sarvi Saidhujaeva, 6-4.
 
Policare and Martorell won their match, 6-3, over the mixed duo of Alexandra Lazarova form Wichita State and Texas Tech’s Gabriela Tenorio.
 
Vogasari and Nikolaeva dropped their match to Alex Angyalosy and Katelyn Jackson of Texas Tech, 6-4. Koch and Toran Ribes were not able to overcome Maryland’s No. 58-ranked team of Ekaterina Tour and Eva Alexandrova and fell, 6-3. Policare and Martorell lost their match to Caroline Turner and Mary Katherine Lewis of Auburn, 6-3.
