Kansas opens season at the Big 5 Challenge

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas tennis kicks off the 2018 fall season Thursday at the Big 5 Challenge at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
 
The Jayhawks are one of 13 teams competing in the Big 5 Challenge. Kansas will see some familiar opponents as three other Big 12 schools will be represented in Kansas State, TCU and Texas Tech. The nonconference teams competing include Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Georgia, Missouri, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
 
KU seniors Anastasia Rychagova and Nina Khmelnitckaia begin the season ranked No. 11 nationally in doubles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Both Rychagova (No. 6) and Khmelnitcakia (No. 106) are also ranked in singles, along with fellow senior Janet Koch at No. 124.
 
Competition starts for the Jayhawks Thursday evening against Notre Dame in doubles at 6 p.m. The Fighting Irish open the season with Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence ranked as the No. 32 doubles team in the nation. KU’s singles matches are slated to begin at 8:30 a.m, Friday morning against Arizona.
