Khmelnitckaia finishes undefeated at the Kansas Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior Nina Khmelnitckaia earned three doubles wins and had three singles victories to go undefeated at the Kansas Invitational hosted at the Jayhawk Tennis Center over the weekend.

Khmelnitckaia played a tough match Sunday with Texas Tech’s Lana Rush and came out on top, 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 10-7. Janet Koch defeated Alex Valenstein of TTU, 6-4, 6-3. Playing against Wichita State’s Ting-Ya Hsu, Tatiana Nikolaeva downed the Shocker for a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

“We competed better as team (Sunday),” said head coach Todd Chapman. “Maybe we didn’t get the results we were hoping for, but we put ourselves in winning positions on most of the courts. We played good competition this weekend and saw some things that we need to get better at.

“Everyone has one last tournament next weekend and the mindset should be to continue to work this week during practice. It’s a short week, but we’ll put in the work can to put ourselves in the best situation to end the fall season the way we want.”

Maria Toran Ribes fell to the Red Raiders’ Katelyn Jackson, 6-2, 6-2. Amber Policare dropped her match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, to Gabriela Tenorio of TTU. Carla Pons Martorell wasn’t able to top Alexandra Lazarova of WSU, and fell, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
