Koch 5-0 after day two of Notre Dame Fall Invite

Notre Dame, Ind. – Kansas sophomore Janet Koch added three more wins on the second day of the Notre Dame Fall Invitational, earning wins in both singles and doubles play Saturday and has posted a perfect 5-0 mark at the event.

Koch won a three-set match against Rachel Chong of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-7, 6-0. Koch paired with Anastasia Rychagova to beat Notre Dame’s Rachel Chong and Bess Waldram, 6-2. The duo also defeated Bianca Mok and Morgan Barnhill of Denver, 7-5. Rychagova also won a three-set singles match, beating Brooke Boda of Notre Dame, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to also go undefeated on day two.

“I thought we got better today (Saturday) and that is always a good sign of where the team is headed,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “We played some good tennis in some spots, but more than anything we competed well. We are continuing to learn how to win when we don’t play our best tennis and today (Saturday) was a good example of it.”

Maria Toran Ribes was also perfect on day two winning her singles match against Zoe Spence of Notre Dame, 6-5, 6-2. Toran Ribes teamed with Tatiana Nikolaeva to win two doubles matches on day two. The pair beat Notre Dame’s duo of Jane Fennelly and Zoe Spence, 6-0. For their second win, Toran Ribes and Nikolaeva defeated Sonja Radosevic and Gracia Mboko of Denver, 6-4. Nikolaeva dropped her singles match to Bess Waldram of Notre Dame, 6-1, 6-2.

Nina Khmelnitckaia defeated Jane Fennelly of Notre Dame in a three-set match, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. Khmelnitckaia and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum paired up for doubles, but the duo wasn’t able to top Brooke Broda and Allison Miller of Notre Dame and lost 6-3. The duo also dropped a doubles match to Denver’s Julia O’Loughlin and Maureen Slattery and lost 6-3.

Bernard-Feigenbaum came up short in singles play as well, falling to Notre Dame’s Allison Miller, 7-6, 6-2.

“Sunday is the last day of our fall season, so I expect us to come out with a lot of energy and really play hard,” said Chapman.

The Jayhawks will conclude play on Sunday.
