KU tennis ranked 12th; Koch, Khmelnitckaia ranked No. 2 in doubles

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas tennis team is ranked No. 12 in Wednesday’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) poll.
 
Kansas fell five spots  after going 1-1 this past weekend. Last Friday KU was edged, 4-3, by then-No. 22 Washington, which jumped all the way to No. 7. Then Sunday the Jayhawks won at Oregon, recording their fourth sweep of the season. KU had spent the previous week at No. 7, tying the program’s highest-ever ranking (with the 1994 Jayhawks).
 
Meanwhile, KU’s senior duo of Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia moved up one spot this week to No. 2 in the nation. They sport an 8-0 record this spring at the No. 1 doubles position. Senior Anastasia Rychagova and sophomore Sonia Smagina have gone 9-1 as a doubles team in 2019 and are ranked as the 40th-best duo in the nation.
 
To Jayhawks are also ranked in singles. The undefeated Rychagova climbed 13 spots to No. 34, while Koch comes in at No. 88.
 
UP NEXT
Kansas tennis begins Big 12 Conference play Friday, March 15, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, against Oklahoma State. This will mark the second meeting of the season between the two programs; Oklahoma State claimed the first matchup, 4-3, during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in January.
