No. 7 Kansas travels Northwest for more Top-25 competition

LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 7 Kansas tennis ventures to the Pacific Northwest this weekend to face two Pac-12 opponents – No. 22 Washington and Oregon.

The Jayhawks face the Washington Huskies Friday, March 1, at 5 p.m. (Pacific) time at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center, and Oregon on Sunday, March 3, at noon (Pacific) time at the Student Tennis Center.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Kansas and Washington. The Huskies finished the 2017-18 season 16-11 overall and ranked No. 43 in the nation. This season, Washington boasts a 9-1 record, including wins over NC State, Gonzaga, Hawaii, Portland, Eastern Washington, Seattle, Idaho, UC Santa Barbara and San Jose State.

Last spring Kansas beat Oregon, 4-1, in the inaugural meeting between the two programs. Oregon advanced to the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, and finished the season ranked No. 28 in the country. The Ducks are 6-3 this year, including victories over Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary’s, Fresno State, Illinois-Chicago, Montana and San Diego.

“This weekend is going to be a great test for our team on the road,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “Both Washington and Oregon are quality teams and they will both provide us with a tough test. Both matches will give us a chance to see where we at this point in the season headed into Big 12 Conference play in a couple of weeks.”

Kansas now is 8-1 on the season and is currently riding a six-match win streak. Last weekend the Jayhawks won two matches against top-50 opponents, sweeping both No. 41 Arkansas and then-No. 44 Air Force. Counting those two wins, the Jayhawks have now recorded wins over seven ranked teams, having also defeated Northwestern (currently No. 10 in the nation), No. 26 Illinois, No. 36 Wichita State, Tulsa (then No. 46) and Rice (currently No. 47).
