Rychagova and Vogasari head to Fall Nationals

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior Despoina Vogasari and junior Anastasia Rychagova will represent the Jayhawks at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday in Indian Wells, California at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Rychagova, who is making her second appearance at the event, will compete as the No. 10-seeded singles player. She earned her automatic berth by claiming the title of champion of the main draw consolation singles bracket at the ITA Women’s All-American in early October.

Originally in the qualifying bracket of the ITA Women’s All-American, Rychagova won three-straight matches to move on to the main draw. She was knocked out in the first round after a three-set loss to the eventual champion and began play in the consolation bracket. Rychagova then downed four-consecutive opponents, each of which were all ranked in the ITA preseason top-20 (No. 17, 15, 7 and 19), to be named champion of the back draw.

“Debbie (Vogasari) and Nastia (Rychagova) have worked hard and earned a great opportunity to represent the University of Kansas this weekend in the Oracle ITA Fall National Championship,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I know they both are excited for this opportunity and we look forward to them playing against the best players in the country.”

Making the trip for the third time in her collegiate career, Vogasari earned her automatic bid in the fall finale by advancing to the singles finals match at the ITA Central Regional Championships. Vogasari defeated six-straight opponents to find herself in the final match where she ultimately fell the the No. 2 seed.

Rychagova will face Asuka Kawai of Illinois Wednesday at 10 a.m., CT and Vogasari will see Baylor’s Theresa Van Zyl at 11:30 a.m., CT in the round of 64.
