Vogasari named Big 12 Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Kansas senior Despoina Vogasari has been named the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Vogasari is now the third Jayhawk this season to earn the honor, joining junior Anastasia Rychagova (February 20) and junior Nina Khmelnitckaia (March 13). This marks the most player of the week awards won in one season during head coachTodd Chapman’s tenure.

No. 118 Vogasari ended the weekend with four wins against then-ranked No. 16 Texas Tech Friday and TCU Sunday.

Facing Texas Tech in Lubbock, Vogasari and Maria Toran Ribes got off to a hot start in doubles against Lana Rush and Alex Valenstein, going up 4-0. They claimed a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot to set up court one to clinch the doubles point. Seeing the nation’s No. 11-ranked Gabriela Talaba at the No. 1 position, Vogasari completed the upset in two quick sets, 6-2, 6-2.

The win marked her highest-ranked victory against an opponent so far in her collegiate career. With her match finished and the Jayhawks up 2-0, she paved the way for a, 4-0, victory against the Lady Raiders, ending KU’s 13-match losing streak against Texas Tech.

Playing TCU, Vogasari and Toran Ribes came from behind for a, 6-4, win over Aleksa Cveticanin and Aleksandra Zenovka, claiming the doubles point for the Jayhawks. Competing against Cveticanin in singles, Vogasari edged the Horned Frog in the first set, 7-6 (7-5). She then carried her momentum from the tiebreaker to her second set to take it, 6-0. Her 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory was the match-clinching point for Kansas, earning the program its second-ever win against TCU.

After her No. 17-ranked team went 2-0 in Texas, Vogasari is now 10-4 in dual matches, 21-9 overall and on a seven-match win streak. Vogasari and Toran Ribes teamed up during dual play and have an 8-2 mark so far. They have won four-straight matches.
