Vollmer Earns Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week Honors

IRVING, Texas – Junior combined-event specialist Lindsay Vollmer was tabbed as the Big 12’s Indoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week the league announced Wednesday afternoon. Vollmer tallied two career bests and an event victory last weekend at the Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The award is the first weekly honor for the All-American.

The Hamilton, Mo., native continued her early-season heroics at the Holiday Inn Invitational after taking down a pair of her own personal bests. The NCAA’s reigning heptathlon champion began her day in the shot put and saved her best throw for last, hitting a mark of 12.19 meters (40’0″) on her third attempt. The throw bettered her previous indoor best by nearly four inches and ended up earning her a 17th-place finish.

Just 10 minutes later the junior headed to the starting blocks for the final of the 60-meter hurdles. Vollmer used the final 20 meters to pull away from the field and cross the finish in 8.45, which shaved .02 seconds off her previous best, which she set at the Bill Easton Classic two weeks ago. The time earned Vollmer an easy victory and puts her at No. 25 in the national standings as well as fourth in the Big 12 ranks.

Vollmer’s day still wasn’t done, however, as she joined forces with her KU teammates in the distance medley relay. With the help Vollmer’s 400-meter leg, the Jayhawks passed the baton around in 11:42.06, giving Kansas the victory by nearly 12 seconds and the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this season.

Vollmer and the rest of her KU teammates will be in action this Friday, Jan. 24, to play host to the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence. The meet is slated to begin at 9 a.m., and conclude a 8:15 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
