Dixon Tabbed as Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week

IRVING, Texas – For the second-consecutive week the Kansas women’s track & field team saw one of its athletes earn Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors after senior sprinter Diamond Dixon was selected by the league office Wednesday afternoon. The announcement marks the fourth time Dixon has garnered the award and the first since she was named the conference’s female athlete of the week on April 25, 2012.

Dixon posted another conference-leading time last Friday as she took part in the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence. The senior out of Houston was the top-collegiate finisher in her first 400-meter race of the season, finishing in a time of 53.97. The time converts to the NCAA standard of 53.26, which is the fastest in the Big 12 and No. 4 in the national ranks so far in 2014. Dixon then helped her 4×400-meter relay team to a victory and season-best time of 3:45.16.

Dixon now holds the Big 12’s fastest marks in both the 400 meters and 600 yards. She also holds top-five times in the 60 meters and 200 meters.

The KU women have now claimed each of the first two athlete of the week awards in 2014 after junior Lindsay Vollmer earned her first-career conference honor on Jan. 22.

After taking the week off, Kansas track & field will return to action on Feb. 7-8, when the Jayhawks trek to New York, N.Y., to take part in the Armory Collegiate Invitational.
