ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Senior Alex Bishop earned Second Team All-America honors after finishing 15th in the pole vault Saturday night at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Bishop claimed a spot on the second team for the second time in his career after also taking 15th at the outdoor championships last season.
Bishop, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., entered the meet having hit the 11th-best vault in the NCAA earlier this year, a personal-best clearance of 4.45 meters (17’10½”) at the Armory Invitational on Feb. 8. Bishop’s NCAA qualification put him in position to become the 22nd Jayhawk pole vaulter to earn All-America honors at the indoor national championship meet.
The senior kicked off his NCAA competition Saturday with an easy clearance at the opening height of 5.20 meters (17’0¾”) on his first vault of the day. The national championship field quickly showed it mettle as all 16 competitors, like Bishop, were able to get over the first bar with relative ease.
Bishop had a little more trouble with the second height but managed to vault over the bar of 5.30 meters (17’4½”) on his second attempt. Once again though, all 16 competitors were able to get over the bar, putting additional pressure on the senior.
The next height in the progression, a bar of 5.40 meters (17’8½”), proved to be too much for Bishop. Despite nearly sliding over on his third attempt, the bar could not stay up, ending his day with a 15th-place finish.
Bishop’s finish earned a spot on the All-America second team, the third time in seven years a Jayhawk vaulter has claimed All-America honors in the indoor pole vault.
At the end of the meet the final team standings were tabulated and the Jayhawk women managed to tally a 39th-place finish with the help of Sydney Conley‘s five points by way of her fourth-place finish in the long jump Friday. The finish marked the fifth-straight year the women’s team placed at the NCAA indoor meet.
With the conclusion of the indoor track & field season, the Kansas men and women will now turn their attention to the outdoor portion of the 2014 campaign. The Jayhawks will kick the season off in less than two weeks when they hit the road for Austin, Texas to take part in the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays set for March 26-29.
