Stigler Garners Big 12 Athlete of the Week Honors

IRVING, Texas – For the second time this season, senior Michael Stigler was tabbed as the Big 12 Track & Field Athlete of the Week the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. Stigler, who boasts the world’s No. 1 and No. 4-ranked times in the 400-meter hurdles, is the second Jayhawk in Big 12 history to earn two weekly conference honors in a single season.

Already this year’s world-leader in the event, Stigler tacked on another one of the planet’s fastest 400-meter hurdles times last weekend at the Rock Chalk Classic. The senior blew away the field by nearly four seconds as he leaned across the finish in 48.86, his second-fastest time of the season and his career. Stigler’s performance, which only trails his own 48.44 run earlier this year at the Texas Relays, is the No. 2 400-meter hurdle time run by a collegian in 2015. Stigler now owns two of the four fastest times in the world this year. The senior also anchored the Kansas men’s 4×400-meter relay to victory, bringing the Jayhawk baton across in 3:11.97 to take the win.

The weekly honor marked the second of 2015 for the Canyon, Texas native and the third of his career. Stigler only trails Mason Finley (five career Big 12 weekly awards) for the most conference athlete of the week awards claimed by a Jayhawk.

Stigler and the rest of his Kansas teammates will return to action May 15-17 at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Ames, Iowa.
