Kansas Track & Field Sending Three to USA Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas track & field squads will see three Jayhawks compete at this week’s USA Championships in Sacramento, California. The meet, which will be hosted by Sacramento State University June 26-29, will feature the top athletes, professional and amateur, from across the U.S.

Slated to compete first inside SCU’s Hornet Stadium will be junior Michael Stigler in the qualifying rounds of the 400-meter hurdles. Stigler, who ran to a runner-up finish in the event two weeks ago at the NCAA Championships, enters the meet as the seventh-ranked American this year. As a freshman, he advanced to the finals and took seventh overall at the Olympic Trials in 2012 before posting a 15th-place finish at last year’s USA Championships. Stigler’s week will begin on Friday, June 27 in the first round of 400-meter hurdles, which is set to start at 6:30 p.m. (CT).

Sophomore Sydney Conley will look to continue her outstanding 2014 campaign as she readies herself for her first USA Championship meet. Conley attained First Team All-America status twice during the collegiate season with a pair of top-eight finishes in the long jump at the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships. Conley enters the meet as the No. 12 seed and will head to the runway on Saturday, June 28 for a 2:15 p.m. (CT) start.

Jessica Maroszek will conclude the week for KU in the discus finals on Sunday, June 29. Maroszek recently concluded her final collegiate season in the Crimson and Blue by earning First Team All-America honors in the event for the third time. At last year’s USA Championship meet in Des Moines, Iowa, she was the top collegiate finisher after posting a seventh-place finish. Maroszek, who has tallied the sixth-best throw by an American this year, will begin her competition at 1:45 p.m. (CT) Sunday.

The Jayhawks also have several alumni scheduled to compete in Sacramento this week. Andrea Geubelle, who was a three-time NCAA Champion for KU from 2010-13, is slated to compete in both the long jump and triple jump competitions. Geubelle will enter the triple jump as the defending champion after claiming the title at last year’s USA meet. She will begin her title defense at 7:35 p.m. (CT) Thursday, June 26.

Kyle Clemons, who sprinted for the Kansas men from 2010-13, will compete in the 400 meters. The Rowlett, Texas native is coming off the USA title in the indoor 400 meters earlier this year as well as being a member of the world-record breaking indoor 4×400-meter relay team that won the IAAF World Championship title in March. Clemons will begin his week in the first round of the event at 8:05 p.m. (CT) Thursday.
