LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-District Men’s Track/Cross Country Team, selected by CoSIDA, was announced on Tuesday by the organization, with Kansas track & field junior Hussain Al Hizam earning NCAA Division I – District 7 First Team recognition. The Academic All-District team recognizes the top student-athletes in track and cross country for their combined performances on the playing field and in the classroom

This is Al Hizam’s second time earning Academic All-District recognition, and comes on the heels of the Jubail, Saudi Arabia native’s qualification to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Al Hizam has had an extremely successful 2017-18 campaign, winning the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championship in the pole vault, winning the Big 12 Indoor & Outdoor pole vault titles, and breaking the Kansas indoor school record in the event, his own Saudi Arabian national records in both indoor and outdoor, the Texas A&M’s Gilliam Indoor Stadium facility record and the Big 12 Outdoor record.

First Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, with Google Cloud Academic All-America teams announced in June.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United State and Canada. The Google Cloud Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four division – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division.

Al Hizam will compete in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon on June 6 at 5 p.m. PDT (7 p.m. CDT), with the meet running through June 9.
