Dudarev named Big 12 Athlete of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Following a performance that broke multiple records over the weekend, Kansas thrower Gleb Dudarev has been named Big 12 Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week, announced by the conference offices on Wednesday.

Dudarev, a sophomore from Vitebsk, Belarus, won the hammer throw title at the Kansas Relays, breaking his own KU program record, the meet record, and the Rock Chalk Park Facility record with a throw of 78.04 meters (256-0 ft.). Not only did the mark break the three records, but it is currently the best in the NCAA this season, ranks fifth in the world this year and makes him the No. 5 performer all-time in NCAA history.

The award marks the first weekly honor of the outdoor season for the Kansas track & field squads, and the third since the beginning of the indoor season. Junior Nicole Montgomery was named the Women’s Athlete of the Week on January 17 and senior Laura Taylor was named the Women’s Athlete of the Week on January 31.

This marks the fourth time in Dudarev’s career he has been Big 12 Athlete of the Week, as he also earned it once in the outdoor season last year and twice during his freshman indoor campaign.

Kansas returns to action this weekend at the inaugural National Relay Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas, April 27-28. The meet, which will be held at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas, will feature 16 of the most respected track & field programs across the country, and will feature a two-hour portion of batons-only action to close out the meet on Saturday. The final two-hour segment, which is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. CDT, will be televised on the SEC Network and streamed online on the SEC Network Plus, via WatchESPN.com.
