Kansas men enter preseason rankings at No. 9

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released the 2019 Division I Men’s Indoor Track & Field Rating Index on Thursday, which saw the Kansas men’s team enter the 2019 campaign at No. 9.

The Jayhawk men finished the 2018 indoor season ranking No. 17, and accumulated 59.64 points in the first ratings of the 2019 season. Fellow Big 12 school Texas Tech ranked No. 1 in the preseason index with 167.45 points, and Texas came in at No. 4 with 96.46. Other Big 12 schools to grace the men’s top-25 included Kansas State at No. 24.
 
Top returners for the Kansas men include senior Hussain Al Hizam, who won the 2018 NCAA Indoor Men’s National Championship in the pole vault, and redshirt sophomore Gleb Dudarev, who did not compete in the 2018 indoor campaign, but earned First Team All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships with a sixth-place finish in the weight throw.
 
The Kansas women’s team, who also finished the 2018 campaign at No. 17, entered the USTFCCCA 2019 Division I Women’s Indoor Track & Field Rating Index at No. 27 with 30.62 points. Arkansas topped the first women’s rankings with 149.55 points, while three Big 12 schools ranked above the Jayhawks on the women’s chart with Texas at No. 12 (62.77), Baylor at No. 15 (49.68) and Texas Tech at No. 26 (36.46).

Kansas’ women’s team will be led by senior Sharon Lokedi, who earned two First Team All-America honors during the 2018 indoor season (3,000m and 5,000m) and won the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 10,000-meter run.
 
The Jayhawks have already completed in one meet of the indoor season in November, but will hit the track next week, kicking off the new year with the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular at Anschutz Sports Pavilion in Lawrence on Jan. 18.
