LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas track & field teams are set for a competitive weekend of split-squad action across the country, competing at four different meets. The Jayhawks will send student-athletes to the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, March 29-31, the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival in California, March 30-31, and the Oral Roberts Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 31.
JAYHAWK CREW HEADED TO AUSTIN FOR HISTORIC TEXAS RELAYS
Kansas will send 29 athletes to the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, March 29-31. The meet opens action on Wednesday, March 28, but no Jayhawks are scheduled to compete until the second day of competition in Austin.
The Jayhawks are sending a strong contingent of pole vaulters to the Texas Relays, including 2018 Indoor First Team All-American Laura Taylor and 2018 Indoor National Champion Hussain Al Hizam, who will each be competing in the “University Elite” sections of the pole vault on Saturday.
Another 2018 Indoor First Team All-American, sophomore Bryce Hoppel, will also be in action at the Texas Relays. The sophomore from Midland, Texas will be running in the invitational section of the 800 meters on Friday evening.
KU DISTANCE CREW TREKKING TO THE WEST COAST
Seven Kansas distance runners will travel to the West Coast, splitting time between two different meets. Michael Melgares, Jack McDonald, Avery Hale and Chace Hale will run at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival at Chabot College Track in Hayward, California, March 30-31, and Dylan Hodgson, Courtney Coppinger and Sharon Lokedi will compete at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California, March 30-31.
Lokedi is coming off an indoor campaign where she earned two Big 12 Championships and two First Team All-America honors in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, as well as breaking school records in both events and as a member of the distance medley relay team.
THIRTY-THREE JAYHAWKS READY FOR ACTION IN TULSA
A majority of the KU men’s and women’s rosters will make the trip south to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Oral Roberts Invitational on Saturday, March 31. Each event area will be represented, with a big group of sprinters and hurdlers set to compete inside the ONEOK Sports Complex.
Senior jumper Barden Adams is one of the 33 Jayhawks set to compete in Tulsa and will be competing in the long jump. Adams is coming off a First Team All-America campaign in the indoor season, after the West Orange, New Jersey native posted an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this month.
Field events are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., and track action will kick off at noon. The 4×400-meter relays are the last scheduled events of the meet, slated to start at 5:15 p.m.
