Langs named Big 12 Rookie of the Week

IRVING, Texas — Kansas volleyball freshman middle blocker Rachel Langs is the Big 12 Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Langs was instrumental on the defensive front for the Jayhawks over the week averaging a league-best 2.14 blocks per set, that comprised of six total in an upset bid against then-No. 4 Texas (Oct. 10) and nine in a three-set sweep at Texas Tech (Oct. 13).

Langs’ nine stuffs against the Red Raiders helped the Jayhawks set a new KU single-match three-set record for blocks as they finished the contest with 16.5 – 2.5 blocks more than the previous mark (14.0) set Sept. 12, 2014 against Villanova.

“We have been really organized up front defensively,” head coach Ray Bechard said following Saturday’s match at Texas Tech. “The front row created a confidence in our defense. As the match went along, we stayed really organized behind the block too.”

Langs’ efforts helped Kansas extend its winning streak to nine matches as she holds down the No. 1 spot in the Big 12 and No. 9 spot in the country in blocks per set, averaging 1.52. In league play, that number jumps to 1.84 and is .36 points higher than the next blocker in teammate Zoe Hill (1.48).

The honor is Langs’ second Big 12 weekly nod this season and KU’s fourth of the year in as many weeks. Hill garnered Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors Sept 24. and Oct. 8, and Langs also earned that same distinction Oct. 1.

Kansas (13-4, 6-0 Big 12) returns to the court to take its nine-match winning streak into Wednesday night’s (Oct. 17) Big 12 bout against Kansas State in the first of two Dillons Sunflower Showdown contests. The Jayhawks and Wildcats will faceoff on ESPNU from inside Ahearn Field House at 8 p.m.
