Wellness Events Surround KU Women’s Hoops Homestand

LAWRENCE, Kan. – February marks the celebration of several causes throughout the month, among those foundations are Go Red for Women’s Heart Health and Breast Cancer Awareness, both of which Kansas women’s basketball is helping raise awareness for with events centered around its homestand next week.
 
New this season is KU’s first Go Red game, which will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 17, against TCU. With Wednesday night’s contest the Jayhawks will help bring attention to women’s heart health. More than 627,000 women have been saved from heart disease, while more than $300 million has been raised and allocated to research specific to women. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women eight million women in the U.S., are currently living with heart disease.

All fans wearing red will receive $5 admission when purchased at the Kansas Athletics ticket office the day of game. If buying tickets prior to the game, use the “GORED” promo code to have the opportunity to purchase a discounted $5 ticket. All fans in attendance will receive a pom giveaway, while supplies last. Additionally, the first 200 KU students in the doors will get free corn dogs and Lays chips.

On the concourse, informational booths from the American Heart Association and Lawrence Memorial Hospital can be found promoting heart disease awareness and prevention. The Fun Zone will also host inflatable games, poster making, photo booth and cookie making station before tipoff.
 
Each season Kansas honors and remembers all individuals whose lives have been affected by breast cancer and all cancer through its ‘Jayhawks for a Cure’ game. This year, the annual pink game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, against Oklahoma.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death among women. However, over 2.9 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.
 
All 15 Jayhawk warm-up tops, one for each student-athlete, will represent a person in the fight with cancer or honor a life that lost their battle with cancer. The online auction to place a loved one’s name on a warm-up is now available on KUAthletics.com/auctions.

Prior to tipoff, a survivor luncheon will be held in the atrium. All survivors are invited and encouraged to attend along with the pregame on court recognition and high-five tunnel prior to tipoff. For the kids in attendance, the Fun Zone will host inflatable games, poster making, photo booth and a cookie making station. Additionally, a face painter and balloon artist will be on the concourse.

Following the match-up with the Sooners, a live auction will take place with all proceeds being donated to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the KU Cancer Center. Items included in the postgame auction are a signed team jersey, a pair of tickets to Ladies Night Out, a facilities tour, a birthday party in Allen Fieldhouse during a women’s basketball game, travel for two on a 2016-17 charter road trip with KU women’s basketball, a Brandon Schneider Golf Tournament package and more.

Centerplate, the official concessions of Kansas Athletics, will wear pink aprons from the game, along with selling pink straws for $1, for which the proceed go towards the ‘Jayhawk for a Cure’ cause. Pink cotton candy will also be sold to promote ‘Jayhawks for a Cure.’
