O’Neal Signs With Jayhawks For 2014-15

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s basketball head coach Bonnie Henrickson announced Monday the addition of Timeka O’Neal to KU’s roster for the 2014-15 season. O’Neal signed a valid National Letter of Intent to play for the Jayhawks.

O’Neal will transfer to Kansas after previously playing two seasons at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

“Timeka has had tremendous success at Johnson County,” said Henrickson. “She has played at a high level and has an expectation to be successful. We’re really excited to welcome her to the Jayhawk family.”

A native of Kansas City, Mo., O’Neal earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Third-Team All-American honors at the conclusion of her sophomore season. She also was named Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) honorable mention All-America. O’Neal averaged 11.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and a team-best 5.1 assists per game in her final season at JCCC. She had the ninth-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the nation at 3.0.

“She’s a young lady who has great court vision, facilitates and handles the ball well,” Henrickson said. “She can play in transition, she can shoot the ball well and stretch the defense from the three. Timeka can make the simple plays, but she can also make a difficult play look easy.”

O’Neal led the Lady Cavaliers to a 60-4 mark over her two-year career and two conference championships. She finished her career ranked seventh on JCCC’s all-time assists chart with 284, 11th all-time with 105 3-point field goals and tied for fourth all-time with a .796 career free throw percentage. O’Neal totaled 695 career points for a career average of 11.2 points per game.

“Timeka is from the Kansas City Metro Area and grew up playing basketball with Natalie (Knight) and Chayla Cheadle,” said Henrickson. “She’s a local kid that can help us be successful here. We are excited about that aspect of her signing and staying close to home.”

The 5-4 guard prepped at Raytown High School, where she was a four-year starter for Jan Handley. O’Neal was a four-time Suburban Mid Seven honoree and earned all-district honors three times. She was named the Suburban Mid Seven Player of the Year as a senior while leading Raytown to a conference championship.  O’Neal averaged double-figure scoring all four years; 14.0, 14.0, 17.0 and 20.0 points per game in her final high school season.
