Jayhawk Golfer Finishes Tied for Seventh at LPGA Event in Thailand

AMPHUR HUA HIN, Thailand – Kansas women’s golfer Thanuttra “Fhong” Boonraksasat birdied on the first hole en route to a 1-over-par 72 for the second-straight day and finish in a tie for seventh at the Singha Hua Hin Open at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course in Amphur Hua Hin, Thailand, Saturday.
Boonraksasat’s 72 included a pair of birdies and consistent play for the entirety of the round. In the final 18 holes, the KU senior-to-be jumped to a tie for seventh place with a 225 score (81-72-72) after being tied for 12th heading into the final day. Just two golfers fired a round better than Boonraksasat’s on Saturuday.
Professional Pornanong Phatlum was one of the two as she completed her reign over the field, taking medalist honors following her 2-under-par 69, the best score in the final round. She finished 6-under-par with a score of 207 (68-70-69), 10 strokes ahead of second-place Manuschaya Zeemakorn’s 217 (71-72-74). Boonraksasat finished tied for sixth among the amateurs golfers competing.
A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonraksasat qualified for the Singha Hua Hin Open by shooting a 72 and tying for first in Tuesday’s qualifier, also played at Royal Hua Hin Golf Course. Throughout the weekend, she improved from 20th in the standings after round one, to 12th place after the second round and finally shot up to a tie for seventh to wrap up the Singha Hua Hin Open.
This is the third LPGA event in Thailand for Boonraksasat this summer. She finished tied for 15th at the Fourth Singha-Sat Thai LPGA Championship at Black Mountain Golf Course in Hua Hin, Thailand, June 5-7, and tied for 12th at the Fifth Singha-Sat Thai LPGA Championship at Watermill Golf and Garden in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand, July 3-5.
Boonraksasat was second on the KU team in 2012-13 with a 75.9 stroke average. She was KU’s top scorer in five of 12 events during the season and posted six top-10 finishes.
